Jonah 2

2:1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish 2:2 and said,

“I1 called out to the LORD from my distress,

and he answered me;2

from the belly of Sheol3 I cried out for help,

and you heard my prayer.4

2:3 You cast me5 into the deep waters,6

into the middle7 of the sea;8

the ocean current9 engulfed10 me;

all the mighty waves11 you sent12 swept13 over me.14

2:4 I thought15 I had been banished from your sight,16

that I would never again17 see your holy temple!18

2:5 Water engulfed me up to my neck;19

the deep ocean20 surrounded me;

seaweed21 was wrapped around my head.

2:6 I went down22 to the bottoms23 of the mountains;24

the gates25 of the netherworld26 barred me in27 forever;28

but you brought me29 up from the Pit,30 O Lord, my God.

2:7 When my life31 was ebbing away,32 I called out to33 the Lord,

and my prayer came to your holy temple.34

2:8 Those who worship35 worthless idols36 forfeit the mercy that could be theirs.37

2:9 But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration38 of praise;39

I will surely do40 what I have promised.41

Salvation belongs to the Lord!”42

2:10 Then the Lord commanded43 the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land.
